Flour Tax Reimposed For Six More Months Next January

The Flour Tax will be reimposed for six months from January 17 to aid wheat farmers, under a bill to be introduced in the House of Representatives. Treasurer Casey will move the bill which continues the tax at £2/12/6 a ton, yielding about £900,000 in half a year and around £1,750,000 for the year ending June 30, 1986. Bounties on crop and production and a grant to farmers are outlined, with distribution on the same basis as last year. The move follows the Commonwealth Government’s decision amid failure to align with the Australian Agricultural Council scheme for a home consumption price. Dr Page noted the tax could end or extend as the Commonwealth scheme is adopted, aiming for a 1996 harvest.
