Consumer spending lift boosts economy ahead of election
A September quarter lift in consumer spending of nearly 2 per cent turned a flat economy into a pre election boon for the Government. The preliminary national accounts show 1.2 per cent quarterly growth and just under 5 per cent annual rate, the strongest since the prior year. Inflation remains around 8–9 per cent, with wages easing to 10.3 per cent year on year. Productivity gains have cooled from late last year, while import prices moved little and export prices stayed about 9 per cent higher than a year earlier.
