Supreme Court Grants Divorce Petitions Amid Wartime Desertions

In Canberra the Supreme Court ruled on multiple wartime divorce petitions. Basil John Ritchens sought to dissolve his marriage to Gwendoline Mary Rithens after a desertion during World War II, with a decree returnable in six months. Daniel Bailey represented the petitioner for Rita Grace Bailey, who alleged similar desertion by her husband who returned from service and abandoned their marriage. The court heard testimonies of long military service, separations, and familial influence on the breakdown of homes, granting limited relief and setting returnable dates for the involved parties.
