LONDON Sunday Ivy Hawken a Brighton girl today succeeded in swimming the Channel in 20 hours under special supervision. Miles Hawkes and Frank Perks of Birmingham led the escort. Perk soon overtook Hawkes but quit within five miles of the English coast. Miss Hawkes landed at Kingsdown tide and was sighted four miles from Dover by watchers. She drifted 14 miles before landing and was met by 27 witnesses including three doctors onboard the escort boat. She thanked the cheering welcomers and motored home after steak and chip supper.
Lindsay McGann 14, Leatie O Kien 16, and Eva Findlay 14 fell 200 feet while escaping an old quartz mine shaft at Chiltern. The rope ladder broke near the top. a broken leg was suffered by one girl. McGann climbed by improvised holds using a nickel pencil, reaching the top after two hours. He rode a bicycle into town to summon aid.
While driving a mob of sheep in Claborne a drover warned the slope was moving. He barely escaped as a large ground section gave way and buried the flock and his horse.
R S P C A said today it is obtaining legal advice to press the Government to stop the slaughter of hares at coursing meetings. The society is determined to prevent further killings during the present coursing season.
Reginald Myers pleaded guilty at Derlinghurst Sessions to altering counterfeit coins and was sentenced to three years imprisonment. He denied admitting to passing coins totaling about £1008. The judge noted his prior record and stated a substantial sentence was his duty.
