Increased income and company tax in surplus budget

The 1960-61 budget presented by Treasurer Holt in the House of Representatives raises company tax by 6d in the pound after scrapping the 5 per cent tax concession. Pensions and allowances rise to £5 a week, while the plan targets a cash surplus of £15,493,000 against last year’s £28,500,000 deficit. A surplus of £15,493 is projected.

The budget shows an overall increase with total ACT expenditure for 1960-61 at 12.318 million pounds. Revenue is forecast at 4.169 million, with a significant rise in land rates and home rents to 1.7 million. Grants cover police, education, Canberra University College, and housing loans, while the Interior Department adds 350,000 for housing loans and 500,000 for private building societies.

Graeme Thorne found strangled body in bush edges

Detectives believe Graeme Thorne was strangled after his kidnapping. Three Grandview Grove boys discovered the body about 4.30 pm in scrub near Wakehurst Parkway, wrapped in a blanket and with limbs bound. An examination by authorities followed as Dr. Percy prepared a second autopsy. The Thorne family was notified at Bondi after the grim discovery.
