Reports from Shanghai indicate a major clash looming as a Japanese home army division lands near Liew Ho to reinforce naval forces. Chinese troops flood Chapei while large trains unload at North station. Shanghai death toll reaches 1,167 with 1,328 wounded. Allied evacuations increase and international officials urge protection.
British, American, French officials discuss Shanghai emergency at Whitehall. A battalion of Sikter Rifles to Hong Kong sails on Empress of Asia to aid evacuation by Rajputana liner. President Taft evacuation from Woosung begins Monday. Curfew enforced in International Settlement. 250,000 Chinese refugees hoard scarce rice. Tokyo and Nanking seek troop withdrawal.
Japanese warplanes attacked Nanking mid afternoon dropping bombs on the main thoroughfare and aero drome. Chinese fighters fought back for 90 minutes, claiming six enemy planes shot down while Japanese reports say major Chinese losses. HMS Suffolk arrived to disembark marines as Shanghai firefights and naval actions continued around Hongkou and the Yongtse estuary amid renewed bombardments and attempts to land reinforcements.
On Monday at 11 20 a m a formation of 11 Chinese bombers attacked the Idumo off Shanghai dropping five bombs. One exploded on a pontoon facing the cruiser and another near shore. A third fell near other cruisers as fires broke out in the Japanese area. A British United Press report cites one warrant officer and four bluejackets killed in the raid.
In Shanghai Madame Chiang Kai Shek appeals against bombing of the international settlement. She says accidental bombs from two damaged planes could not be deliberate and notes Generalissimo ordered no bombs south of Soochow Creek. Tokyo reports Japan renews Manchukuo trade controls and urges Nanking to ease anti Japanese policy amid a three and a half hour cabinet communique. Japanese troops push toward Inner Mongolia after offensive from North China.
London dispatch says Whitehall holds a grave view of Chinese affairs. Mr Neville Chamberlain, holidaying in Cumberlandshire, was telephoned by the Foreign Office and informed of recent developments.
Sydney officials state rising airline traffic will require exclusive use of Mascot airport within a year or six months. Flying and training bodies may relocate to other aerodromes in the vicinity. The NSW Superintendent of Aviation caps future operations citing unsuitable growth patterns.
Reports from Fairbanks Alaska describe disjointed radio calls from Soviet airmen believed missing after crossing the North Pole. Rescue planes and three Russian agents searched a 1200 mile ocean stretch toward Barrow while Jimmy Mattern departed Los Angeles toward Fairbanks to help.

Power Survey Sydney reports the Minister for Works and Local Government Mr. Spooner said an expert committee on electrical developments would complete the first draft of their report within a few weeks. It will be sent to London for further investigation.
AUBURN resident Graham Long was burning a yard fire at a new bungalow when a petrol filled tin exploded in flames. He was engulfed, his wife and son could not extinguish it, and he died at St Joseph's Hospital.
In Belgrade on Sunday a Government party member fired at a church banner near a crowd gathered to hear the list of ministers and parliamentarians deprived of church rites. Police fired on the crowd, killing two and seriously injuring four.
Aggregate meetings of miners in Newcastle and several districts accepted the new coal agreement reached at the compulsory conference. The vote was nearly unanimous as leaders W. Orr H. Scanlon F. Lowden urged acceptance to press remaining claims including pensions for old miners. Tomorrow aggregate meetings in western and southern fields were planned as miners rally behind the peace terms and pressure politicians for action.
Melbourne notes report Mr Casey, the Commonwealth Treasurer, blames the State Governments for delay in unemployment insurance reforms. He cites NSW as the lone state proposing a plan while urging courteous, reasonable action and stating there will be no delay in presenting the federal proposal.
The American Battle Monuments Commission unveiled a memorial chapel at Brookwood cemetery in Surrey to honor 600 American soldiers buried there. Col Robert Woodside unveiled the chapel in General Pershing’s absence due to illness and stated that America would fight for world peace but not be pacifists, insisting on honor.
The Spanish steamer Siudad de Cadiz en route to Barcelona was sunk off Gallipoli by shellfire and torpedoes from the submarine C3. The crew were rescued by a Russian tanker.
Defence Department aims to greatly expand the Australian Air Force with nine more squadrons. Most new aircraft would be based at Laverton and Richmond, with units also at Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane and Darwin. The mix includes army co operation, coastal reconnaissance, fighter and bomber, plus two Citizen Air Force squadrons, spread over four years.
Rebels under General Davila crossed into Santander Province and seized positions eight miles southwest of Reinosa on the Torre La Vega road. Reinosa abandoned by loyalists, fall expected soon as rebel forces push toward the city. Refugee policy shocks Basque authorities as ships were readied for 10,000 evacuees. General Dellano reported the rebel cruiser Almirante Cervera sank the Government destroyer Churuka off the northern coast.
A Mass was openly celebrated in Madrid today the first since July 1936 when churches were closed. Admission was by invitation only. Father Leocadio officiated and aids the Government to reestablish freedom of thought in Spain while recruiting Catholic priests.
Survivors from the Panama tanker George W. McKnight report a submarine surfaced about 400 yards away and fired 20 rounds, injuring five crew members and setting the ship ablaze. The British Commodore later landed the 38 crew and towed the vessel as it drifted.
Early today at Daceyville Police Station a taxi driver named Sidney Gower was attacked by three men near Bunnerong Power House. One assailant carried a revolver. after grappling with the robbers, Gower lost the weapon and sustained heavy punches before the trio fled on B motor cycles.
Opposition Leader Mr Curtin attacked the Commonwealth Government over licensing abuses in broadcasting. Citing Sir Archdale Parkhill, he alleged a growing monopoly of newspapers and radio, urged public control rather than nationalisation, and noted the government’s plan to seek an expert report on broadcasting control.
In Sydney the minister overseeing the 150th celebrations backs the ABC action permitting politicians to use radio in the campaign. The Commission will continue under its policy favoring A class stations, with B class stations carrying the effort. General Manager Moses notes politicians are a parja on the microphone.
General secretary J J Graves claimed Labour would widen its by election majority in Gwydir and secure Calaro from the Assistant Minister for Commerce Thorby. He said Riverina candidate Ww J Quirk had strong prospects against the Murry Party, and Eden Monaro’s C R Allen reported well received support across the electorate.
The Government Meteorologist Mr Mares said today that within the next 24 hours the wheat crop would see definite benefit with no rain in the far west and central regions. He added substantial falls are expected where rain is urgently needed.
