The Canberra Model Railway Exhibition at Malkara School attracted about 6,000 people over two days, showcasing N gauge to O gauge layouts, steam locomotives, and a replica 1870s steamboat. The event, organized by the Canberra Society of Model Engineers, highlighted railway details and scenery while raising over 2000 for gymnasium equipment.
Prime Minister Fraser announced Australia will raise its aid to the five ASEAN members from 160 million to 250 million. The funds will be pooled for rapid use on approved projects, with an additional 10 million for ASEAN-Australian joint development efforts.
At a two day ASEAN summit leaders headed by Suharto and Marcos agreed that protectionism harms world economic recovery and called for dismantling tariffs. An explosion and fire razed the Geebung Ski Lodge at Perisher Valley on Saturday morning causing about 50 000 in damage. Seven guests from the Geebung Ski Club in Sydney were away. The blaze began around 10 45 am and burned for thirty minutes before being contained by police rangers and other lodge owners. The cause remains unknown.
Melbourne viewers will access Teletext on TV sets in about eight months. A Philips spokesman said sets with Teletext will display pages of text including news headlines sport results weather travel and stock data. Channel 7 and 9 are testing the service, which will cost about $400 more than standard sets.
A Sydney man died in Bega during the weekend driving a car into a bridge. Across NSW Victoria and Queensland the weekend toll reached 28 with 13 deaths in NSW 12 in Victoria and 3 in Queensland. A van crash on the Maroondah Highway north east of Melbourne killed two men and two women.
The Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Mr Viner, announced that centralised, costly services should be replaced with decentralised approaches tailored to Aboriginal communities. After a four day tour of nine communities across South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, Mr Wiser noted strong resolve among Central Desert Aboriginals to preserve culture and develop decentralised communities within their traditional country.
A Sydney based non profit, Natural Areas Ltd, formed by National Parks Association members, aims to shield wildlife habitats and native forest stands after owners die. It seeks to amend the NSW Conveyancing Act, may donate land to the firm, and would assist with rates or fencing. Donors could keep lifetime use but public access would be restricted. The firm owns 11 acres near Dee Why West, with assets about 16000 dollars, and counts Sydney Bushwalkers and the National Parks Association among shareholders.
