Japan and Australia sign a three year trade pact in Tokyo. Australia recognizes Japan as a full trading partner and waives discrimination against Japanese goods. Australian leaders express mixed doubts but overall acceptance of the agreement.
Australian Trade Minister McEwen and Japanese Minister Fukuda signed a new agreement expanding trade. Japan will boost imports of Australian sugar canne meal leather motor vehicles and dairy while not imposing duties on wool and allowing stabilised soft wheat imports. They aim to mutual expand trade with restricted yet cooperative measures and improved stability in primary commodity exchanges.
Foreign Ministers from three nations signed a nuclear test ban treaty ending six years of negotiations. Krushchev and U Thant attended, with cheering as the pact joined by Rusk and Lord Home. Attendees hosted at a Kremlin luncheon marking the occasion.
Parents at Canberra High School watched 21 hobby groups during Education Week. A three nation summit of Indonesia Malaya and the Philippines issued a communique seeking British concessions and arbitration with the Philippines over North Borneo. They vowed to bar foreign bases from aiding any side and avoid treaties serving major powers. The talks also eyed Malay Sindos plan for a Malay stock confederation.
A blaze in the crew quarters killed Leonard Read 34 of Melbourne and two Norwegian apprentices Lars Telle 16 and Johan Engberg. Two other Norwegians and English seaman Hugh Shrimplin were hospitalized with burns as investigators open an inquest and plan a marina inquiry starting tomorrow.
