Melbourne strike meeting to discuss newspaper walkout
The disputes committee of the Victorian Trades Hall Council will meet tomorrow to discuss the Melbourne daily newspaper strike by more than 4,500 production workers. Secretary M C Jordan declined to comment, noting they will call in any union that can assist. Unions sought an $11 rise, based on margins set for metal trades by the Arbitration Commission earlier this year.

Economist warns on rural costs and tariffs impact
Australian Wool growers and Graziers Council economist G Chislett warned at its annual convention that rural production costs rise about 4.5 percent yearly, faster than living costs, threatening net incomes. He urged productivity gains, cautioned against further import restrictions on Japanese cars, and said Japan could source wool elsewhere or switch to synthetic fibre. The AWGC urged Prime Minister Gorton and Trade Minister McEwen to delay action pending Tariff Board inquiry.
