Record crowds attended two major Anzac remembrance services in Canberra with 1200 at dawn and over 10000 at the War Memorial parade ground forecourt. Officials called the ceremonies impressive and dignified.
Major J McGrath notes the largest crowd at a morning Anzac service in Canberra as the sun breaks through overcast skies. Chaplain-General Hugh Cunningham urges memorials reflect courage, self sacrifice, and conviction. Parade includes ex-service personnel, Navy Army Air Force detachments, and dignitaries led by Prime Minister Menzies and Governor-General De Lisle.
At the memorial yesterday unsupervised children caused disruption during the nzac 9 Commemoration Service. Police and officials escorted several from the official area as firecrackers exploded during the two minutes of silence for Australia’s war dead.
More than 1,000 ex servicemen and women joined the Anzac Day march in Anzac Park as Governor-General Lord De Lisle took the salute. Ex veterans walked with shoulders back and heads high during the stirring ceremony.
In Sydney and across Australia, over 100000 people braved rain and cold to honor 24000 veterans in the 44th Anzac Day march. Crowds in Perth and Melbourne joined salutes while New Zealand and overseas observances in London Athens Yokohama and Rome marked the day with wreaths church services and dawn ceremonies.
Dawn today over Port Moresby recalled the Owen Stanley Ranges and the Kokoda saga as Anzac Day ceremonies honored 15 700 Australians killed or wounded in Papua and New Guinea from 1942 to 1945. Bomana War Cemetery held hundreds of Papuan and European residents among 3 799 servicemen interred there. Similar services were held across the territory.
An American Embassy spokesman said troop movements into Thailand depend on regional developments. About 2400 SEATO troops will participate in mid June maneuvers, with half from Thailand and half from SEATO nations including the United States and Britain. France and Pakistan will provide staff officers.
A three man tribunal led by Lord Radcliffe cleared actions surrounding the Vassall affair. It found no basis for whispers that the Navy ministry knew of a spy before Vassall's arrest and rejected allegations about ministerial knowledge. Vassall was convicted last year of passing secrets to Russia.
A cyclone off Queensland and northern New South Wales capsized a trawler, throwing two crew from the wheelhouse and trapping a third. Rescue boats near Noosa River recovered two men from the propeller as the Audrey Jane and other trawlers sought shelter from 90 mile winds and heavy seas sailing from Wynnum to Bundaberg. The cyclone’s center lay about 350 miles east of Tewantin moving south-southwest.
