G A Colman valued the total loss at 125000 to 150000, with water and smoke damage to the front retail area. Police and fire units from Canberra and Queanbeyan contained the blaze. no injuries. Nine measures to curb sewage plant odour near Woden Valley

First total eye transplant at Methodist Hospital in Houston
A 54 year old man from Conroe received the world s first human total eye transplant at Methodist Hospital in Houston. Surgeon team led by Dr Conrad B Moore and Dr Daniel Sighand performed the one hour operation on Mr John Madden to connect donor nerves, with the outcome to be known after about three weeks. The donor was 55 year old Mr O B Hickman who died of a brain tumor. Madden had suffered bilateral corneal blindness and had a prior unsuccessful cornea transplant. a further cornea attempt is planned.
