In a bloodless coup led by four retired French Generals, Algiers and Oran were seized, with dawn and dusk falls respectively. The rebels claimed to act to save Algeria, while Paris reports note the move as a drastic channel shift by right wing forces.
Swift coup in Algiers by Foreign Legion troops surrounds key buildings at dawn and seizes the radio station. General Salan and four other generals plus paratroop Colonel Giraud face military justice after de Gaulle declares a state of emergency. Madrid reports General Salan abroad as revolt spreads to Oran and Constantine.
A rebel claim, echoed by French spokesmen, described ultimatums to General Challe and other commanders near Oran and Algiers. Paris reported new surrender demands while Constantine remained in French hands. Madrid said Satan and two French extremists were confined to Spain as labor unions planned protests.
President Albert Kalonji of South Kasai is crowned Mulopwe in a week long Baluba tribal ceremony at Kundi. The 32-year-old leader, wearing a leopard skin under his suit, undergoes purification rites and flags of local chiefs mark the event.

General Nasution was farewelled by Defence Minister Townley and Australian Ambassador Shaw with his wife and staff. He will return to Sydney Wednesday for a press conference on Australia’s stance toward Indonesia and meet with Prime Minister Menzies and cabinet ministers. He told a radio audience Indonesia needs Australia to a degree, while Australia’s needed role is limited. Indonesia aims to raise production and income under an eight year plan and develop security across the archipelago.
Sydney report says railway detectives in the far and North Western parts of New South Wales were accused by Long District Road Transport Association president W. W. Rowe of threatening graziers with reprisals if they used trucks to move wool instead of rail.
The crash on Cooma Road six miles south of Michelago killed 34 year old Andreas Zoumoulopoulos of Newtown after a car being towed collided with a sports car. Dimitrios Theocharidis of Darlinghurst transported Zoumoulopoulos and two sports car occupants to Canberra hospital where he died. A girl, Rochelle Cohen of Caulfield, Melbourne, was freed and taken to Cooma hospital with a dislocated hip. The two injured hospitalised at Canberra included Dr Geoffrey Collins and his wife Marion with serious injuries. Constable Peter Dawson conducts the investigation and a coronial inquiry will follow.
Dawn Fraser, the Olympic sprint champion, was arrested on Parade Norwood early Sunday after a car stop for a suspected traffic offence. She faced a loitering charge at the Adelaide Police Court and was bailed out on her own bond. Fraser, 23, said she lived at Light Place Colonel Light Gardens and worked as a saleswoman.
