Most of a Soviet United States draft preamble for a disarmament treaty was approved by 17 nations at the conference. Observers said adoption nearly complete, with only one paragraph and the heading contested, marking a rare East West negotiation since the war.
The plan aims for general and complete disarmament under international control in three stages. Arthur Dean and Zorin chair a 17 nation conference, with emphasis on ending the arms race, linking disarmament to UN principles, and seeking a peaceful path to a safer world.
Warren Duncan James George, 1B, of Farmer Street Braddon, faced a Court of Petty Sessions charge for maliciously damaging 12 garbage coins and negligent driving. Two 17 year olds appeared in Children's Court on similar charges. Offences noted as occurring on April 18. George remanded on £50 bail and £50 surety.
Four people were admitted to hospital after two cars collided at the corner of Chisholm and Paterson streets in Ainslie yesterday. Three injured were reported in serious condition last night. Respondents include Kathleen Read of Bywong Station Rungendore Anthony James Read Helmont Bognor of Archibald Street Lyneham and Lisbeth Rotheadt whose address is unknown. Mr Read sustained serious head injuries. Details on injuries to the other three were not available early this morning. Two ambulances were dispatched and the cars were extensively damaged.
Magistrate Mr Button refused to accept the full evidence of international scientist Dr Alfred Gottschalk in an assault and robbery case. Donelly 21 labourer of De Burgh Street Lyneham is charged with assaulting and robbing Dr Gottschalk at Turner on March 23. The court released Gottschalk on a £50 bond and adjourned to hear further questions on whether a crime occurred.
Minister for the Interior Mr Freeth announced a ten percent reduction in fire and house owners insurance premiums for Canberra properties. The cut applies to policies with the Council of Fire and Accident Underwriters and Lloyds members after June 1682 with improvements in fire protection including new water mains and a northern Canberra fire station.
Heavy fog delayed Canberra air traffic yesterday morning for nearly three hours. Planes from Sydney diverted to Cooma and Wagea with a Cooma return at 10 52 am and a Canberra landing at 11 29 am. Viscount from Melbourne and a special Melbourne flight circled until fog lifted, with services resuming around 11 30 am.
