In Washington high American officials assured Australian Trade Minister McEwen that the United States aims to expand open world markets for agricultural goods. The Kennedy Administration backs reducing trade barriers, boosting McEwen’s optimism after opening talks.
McEwen meets with President Kennedy's foreign trade chief Christian Herter in Washington. A luncheon with Averell Harriman preceded a Friday session, as Gossett signals U S aim for multilateral talks and expansion act use for adjustments not protection.
Canberra cleaners began washing over 250 windows of the nine storey M L C Building in London Circuit at an estimated £110 per cleaning, to occur every three months. The price compared with another venue paying £87 for its wash, as reported in The Canberra Times.
An official communique reports President Nasser and representatives from Iraq and Syria signed a three power manifesto pledging freedom unity and socialism. The plan envisions a federal union under central rule with regional autonomy and aims to unify defence foreign policy and economic planning under Cairo. The document targets Palestine and opposes feudalism capitalism and imperialism. Yemen’s Abdul Sallal said Yemen would join once set up, as Cairo signs confirm a new Arab federation.
Air services were affected by fog in Canberra with four Canberra bound commercial flights delayed up to two hours and others diverted to Melbourne and Adelaide. Canberra airport closed for fog early yesterday with ongoing cold spell and frosts. Parliament members returning after Easter holidays were among those affected.

The March jobless total dropped with New South Wales leading declines at 3 473 and Queensland at 2 783 while Victoria and Tasmania fell by 1 759 and 1 659 respectively. Unemployment stood at about two percent of a 4 300 000 workforce, with 12 826 weekly job vacancies and 19 456 unemployed under 21. The A C T figures show 141 men and 129 women unemployed, and the ACTU cautioned relief was not yet felt by the 84 000 still out of work.

The Tariff Board found certain paper and paperboard types dumped in Australia harming local industry. The report, tabled by Minister Faire Hall, recommends higher protection than current duties for most papers, with some fines facing even higher rates. Kraft paper from the U.S. and Britain also sold below value. Sweden kraft to be surveilled. The government will enforce dumping duties on the specified types.
