Rebels fend off landings as government forces bombard Padang. A mixed Indian Ocean fleet of warships and aircraft supported a seaborne assault aimed at dawn. Indonesian Navy says the landing was successful and key towns in Central Celebes also fell to loyalist troops. Rebels encircle Padang under sea and air threat despite fierce shore battery fire.
In Johannesburg a Nationalist Party landslide widened its lead as votes from constituencies poured in. The party held 62 seats to the United Party's 46 with Labour, Independents, and others lagging. Nearly 1.5 million white voters participated in a general election focused on racial segregation. Africans could not vote.
Cockburn Cement Ltd won an appeal against a declaration under the State Government Unfair Trading and Price Control Act. Justice Woltz upheld the appeal in a 48 page decision after hearings in chambers finding no proven monopoly or control over price. President Camille Chamoun plans a constitutional amendment to permit a second six year term, provoking nationwide protests and risk of civil conflict. Supporters cite urgency, while opponents warn of violence amid Western alignment and pan Arab tensions in Beirut.
In Sydney Thuraway the Education Minister said an investigation would probe allegations that East Mills Boys High School head master Cannon ridiculed 13 year old Joseph Mawby for not wearing a uniform. The boy, tearful on return from school, was told uniforms were not strictly compulsory but the head master would continue to point out his clothes each morning.
