National sentiment favors W M Hughes to lead the Commonwealth. Pressure grows to decide leadership promptly. A weekend push to reappoint W M Bruce as party head has drawn support from top officials willing to resign seats for Bruce, who cannot sit in Parliament for three months. Mr R G Caney withdraws his candidacy.
NSW political scene swirled with talk of recalling Sir Bruce and naming him party leader as Mr Casey withdraws to back Bruce’s bid.
