United Press reports King Abdullah II has ordered the Syrian forces in Jordan since the start of the Suez crisis to withdraw. Western diplomats are startled by Jordan’s move as Britain and the United States weigh whether King Hussein can maintain control and keep Syria and other Arab powers aligned. The Jordanian army, under 20,000 strong, is seen as more capable than the Syrians, while UK cabinet discussions and censorship in Amman shape the evolving crisis.
A Queensland grazier dictating his will by torchlight to three men as he lay dying in a hotel room in November 1964 left a blotting paper will. Indonesian Air Force probes alleged treason on Timor Island. Second Flight Lieutenant W. A. Staal, Kupang base commander, was shot while being moved to Jakarta and died later. Earlier reports claimed Major A. Latler, Kupang battalion head, was disarmed and arrested, with Kupang chief of information and Timor office head reportedly detained.
