The Labour Caucus meets Tuesday to decide on executive recommendations to the Richardson Report. Government divisions and unions rally against and in support of salaries reforms, with ministers pay and noncontributory pensions under debate and cabinet set to decide on potential amendments.
The Tibetan rebels set up a provisional government on the Tibet India border. A manifesto cited by Kalimpong says resistance forces formed the government and large areas of Tibet are under rebel control. The Khamba chieftains and their warriors lead the core of the new authority.
A fourth NSW rail blockage in three days occurred at Concord West when a train hit a trailer carrying earth moving gear. The bulldozer operator jumped clear while passengers, many children, were thrown from seats. Wreckage blocked the line and diversions ran. repairs continued into that night.
Wellington reports SEATO delegates from eight member countries affirmed faith in the pact and its role in halting Communist subversion in South East Asia. Douglas Dillon praised SEATO’s military planning and exercises while NZ Prime Minister Nash and UK and Australian ministers stressed collective defense and aid to Pakistan, Thailand, and the Philippines.
The White House and NBC blamed a Reuters report that John Foster Dulles planned to resign as incorrect. White House spokesman James P. is quoted criticizing the radio story as a wild form of reporting and denying the resignation claim.
Dr. Adenauer agreed to resign as chancellor on September 15 marking ten years in office The move followed a party committee vote and shifts in stance on Berlin and European defense The decision surprised U S officials and the French government and London observers foresee a softer Bonn line toward the Soviet Union yet Adenauer remains chancellor during Geneva talks slated for May 11
Mr Holt gave notice of motion in the House of Representatives to read an amendment today. Section 6 concerns voting by A C T members and aims to widen powers on finance affecting the ACT. If the amendment mirrors Northern Territory voting, it would still restrict. MP Fraser criticized the current clause as unjust and urged equal rights for ACT representatives. There are 21 000 electors in the ACT demanding voting rights in Commonwealth Parliament.
