NSW toll reaches 257 for the year after twelve more deaths since 6pm yesterday amid Easter traffic. A mother and baby died in one crash south of Tenterfield as two late model cars collided on the New England Highway. Six injured passengers were flown to Sydney by helicopter and two to Brisbane by ambulance.
A NSW Legislative Council bill proposes January 1 as the first day of every year and standardizes week and month lengths, including a leap year rule. It repeals the Calendar Act 1750 and outlines Easter calculation rules, replacing Julian with Gregorian calendar. The bill’s author, Mr J A Fuller, argues it modernizes the state's legal calendar and preserves a coherent leap year system.
An 18-year-old rider died after a crash on Gidboriani's Pager road near Indlsfall 9 Nor td. In Lincoln Nebraska a separate report notes a bombing incident damaged a sight, with three crew members saved.
Melbourne reports a 24 year old girl killed by a car outside her Echuca home, raising the Easter road toll in Victoria to six. Earlier figures show five pedestrian deaths. In Adelaide, SA records two deaths from suburban and head on crashes. Brisbane notes four road deaths so far with no other serious incidents.
A 100-foot Ameri can helicopter smashed into a tree after taking off from a US base south of the demilitarised zone. Twenty three people died and 49 were injured in what officials call the war's worst crash. Most dead were South Vietnamese militia on a rice gathering detail. one American crew member was also among the fatalities.
The cooler westerly change expected for Sunday in Canberra is now forecast for tonight. The Bureau of Meteorology predicts a few early showers this morning, then a mostly sunny day with cloud increasing in the afternoon. Light morning winds shift to north westerly and strengthen to moderate gusts by afternoon. Maximum temperature expected around 73 degrees.
Israeli and Egyptian forces fought for two hours at the southern Suez Canal end in the first regional artillery duel since March 24. An Israeli spokesman said Egypt started the fighting and reported no Israeli casualties. Egyptian shelling extended north to Deversoir before quiet returned around 8:25 pm.
In Northam near Perth an 11 year old boy accidentally shot his mother, Mrs Marcella Burke, about 50, while she stood in a doorway at Newcastle Road. The bullet entered her head, killing her instantly.
A government backed review may designate eastern Australian sites as prime targets in a nuclear war. Omega navigation stations assist submarines by precise low frequency signals, allowing position fixes within a mile or two, enabling accurate missile launches. New Zealand appears to decline hosting an Omega site, raising Australia and Tasmania or Queensland as possible locations.
Chicago on Friday faced nerve restrained tension as National Guard troops and police patrolled the West Side on the eve of the first anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. murder. Deputy Chief Hartnett urged calm while curfews and firearm restrictions were put in place and shops closed.

Governor Ogilvie ordered troops at Daley's request as a 7 pm to 6 am curfew and other restrictions were imposed. Police reported 159 arrests and 44 injuries as buses and stores were attacked and looting occurred.
The Easter tourney first event saw Bob Wallace and Mick OConnor tied with Ken Caffery and Bernie Gunther at two up. Last year Wallace and Connor shared the title with John Hood and Colin Hoole after dark play. A five hole playoff plus sudden death is planned for tomorrow. Other results noted on the back page.

President Svoboda toured troops amid unrest rumors while journalist visa rules were loosened. In Geneva, Romania urged limits on military maneuvers and called for troop withdrawals and abolition of NATO and the Warsaw Pact.
