Adoption rush for Vietnamese children to be processed quickly
Officials said priority would go to processing adoption applications for Vietnamese children. Me ther McGuire of the Department of the Capital Territory said officials did not know when refugees would be evacuated to Australia. About 28 official applications had been received since October, with most since December. Australian Adoptive Families Association representatives planned to visit Saigon to arrange and bring back orphans whose adoptions were approved. Telephone inquiries to adopt children were around 50 by lunchtime yesterday, mainly for babies and toddlers. The department noted a traditional shortage of citizens willing to adopt and a lack of available local children, with very few adoptions before December 1973. They hoped to process pending applications by tomorrow and noted emergency funding may be sought to assist orphans in Vietnam.
