Industrial Appeals to Board Over Female Cook Case
Brisbane Sept 20 report on July 30 Industrial Magistrate O Kelly hearing a complaint by J Campbell of the AWU that cane cutters Cliderd Wotton and others breached the Sugar Producers Award by employing a female cook. The defence said the worker leased a farm building and provided board. The Ministry ruled this an award evasion. The Board reserved its decision after an appeal. The Board also heard appeal against Mr O Kelly’s finding that Grasso’s cane cutting gang did not employ a certain woman as cook. The Board upheld the magistrate. Mileage near 850 miles had been constructed. Local authorities eligible for relief under amendments, with several others approving to entitle relief. Opposition leader Mr Moore said no serious objection to the Hill as road building would benefit rural people. Mr Godfrey Morgan accused the Government of spending on runn ing roads before elections in electorates with Labour majorities. Clauses could empower an unscrupulous government to influence voters.
