A Holday Away for Solomon Islands Residents
A stay in Honiara reveals a housing shortage at Haonisra with Mr and Mrs Pilewood in residence for two years. Wives of Government officers assist by taking positions to ease accommodation. House boys from an adjacent settlement manage chores, wear caloices, and help decorate. Mrs Firewood conducts elocution and drama classes, with office hours and social routines shaping daily life. Guadalcanal Club is the social centre as the couple plan travel from Cairns to Sydney. The 73 by 20 mile island still bears wartime scars, including live explosive dumps awaiting disposal.
