Herberton Notes From a Busy Local Page
In Herberton Justice Douglas presided over a horse theft case in which William Kert Wilson was found not guilty after the Crown’s pursuit. The district hospital committee agreed to convert nurses quarters to domestic use to meet the 44 hour week and seek two private wards, with a request to the Home Secretary. The town mourned Mary Ann McDonald, with a funeral at the Roman Catholic Church and burial at Herberton cemetery. Local reports cover injuries, a committeeman’s wrist sprain, Tombine Carter’s confinement, and public works including road labour on the Malanda Herberton route. Community activity ranged from strikes and timber concerns to social events, visits, and a movie-like town ball with costumes and refreshments.
