Empire trade and the imperial economy in decline

A. M. Samuel warns that Britain and Australia share a shrinking trade, arguing that world demand exists but Australia misses its portion due to high prices. Barclay's Bank figures show UK imports down 63.0 million and exports down 53.9 million in early 1930, driven by declines in food, drink, tobacco, and raw materials. The trend, driven by reduced manufactured exports, suggests a broader imperial impact and urges action within the Empire.

Resolution Urges Inter Empire Trade to Promote British Goods

The text notes a resolution calling for urgent measures to boost inter imperial trade to secure and expand market access for British products both at home and for export. It argues past hopes for European free trade failed as restrictions rose, urging reciprocal empire-wide accords while keeping open markets for empire products and allowing duties on imports from other nations. It anticipates delegates at the Conference weighing unified empire trade cohesion.
