Sir Arthur Faudden defended the federal Budget arguing it would deliver a real surplus and withstand opposition calls to withdraw it. Frederick McDermott testified at the Royal Commission into the 1947 murder of William Henry Lavers. He denied knowledge of Lavers death, claimed he had long used aliases as a shearer at Manor Park and Condobolin, and said he was questioned by Detective Calman after arrest. Proceedings were adjourned with hearing to continue tomorrow.
The Coward liner Queen Mary reached Southampton twelve hours late after a stormy Atlantic crossing and will sail again on Wednesday with the same cargo, which New York dock strikers refused to unload on the last voyage. The cargo remains in the holds until the liner departs again.
London October 3 Mr Churchill announced further government appointments naming ministers for Housing and Law Government Harold Macmillan for Health and Deputy Leader of the House Captain H F C Crookshank for Transport Fuel and Power Lord Leathers for Scotland James Stuart Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury Patrick Buchan Hepburn Chief Whip and Selwyn Lloyd Minister of State in the Foreign Office Crookshank MacMillan Stuart and Leathers will join the Cabinet An official statement said ministers would be appointed to oversee fuel power and transport departments.
Canberra October 30 British Commonwealth Prime Ministers should convene to map ways to restore the Commonwealth as the leader of the democratic world, proposed by Mr K C Wilson in the House. Defence Production Minister E J Harrison offered to recommend the idea to Cabinet.
London reports say Britain has one option to resolve the Persian dispute by starting bilateral talks with Persia. Tehran circles expect parliamentary debates in Teheran to have little effect, as no British troops are in Persia to impose London will. A separate item notes the US proposing a stop gap plan to move two million tons of Persian oil to the West as a prelude to talks, valuing about 40 million dollars, while Tehran police chief announces arrests of Tudeh Party members for a private meeting in the suburbs.
Canberra. The House of Representatives voted 57 to 46 against a virtual censure of the Government. An opposition motion to cut the first item of the Budget by £1 failed. the House then approved the first item by 58 to 6 and will consider expenditure item by item.
The Minister for Defence Mr P A M McBride informed the House of Representatives that the defence of North Queensland would receive full consideration. He replied to Mr Ha Bruce Labor Queensland who asked if North Queensland would get special treatment in defence plans as the first point threatened in World War II.

In Newcastle today a meeting of about 20 steelworkers voted to return to work. The BHF plant will likely take a week to reach pre strike conditions, with total losses estimated around 27,100. Coke area employees plan a stop work meeting if the dispute is not resolved by the State Industrial Commission within 14 days. The commission has promised to investigate and the workers urged the State Labour Government to invoke arbitration to prevent further stoppages.
Canberra October 30 The House of Representatives adjourned after prayers to allow members to attend the funeral of the late Dr L W Nott first Member for the Australian Capital Territory in the House Mr Hertison and members were aware of his passing and the Speaker was asked to leave the chair to permit tribute. Dr Neil former Mayor of Mackay Queensland was medical superintendent of the Meckay and Canberra hospitals and collapsed en route to Melbourne to take up a new post with the Victorian state electricity commission.
Army officials announced longshoremen had offered to handle cargoes for military orders overseas and mutual aid if civil service dock workers are withdrawn. An army spokesman said the offer had been accepted as the workforce was recruited when a ship’s crew from New York was at full strength.
