Pollen Apparates and Mechanism of Bite
The venom of snakes is produced in the parotid gland and expelled by contracted muscles into a canal at the fang base. The two fangs lie folded and inward, with grooves guiding venom. When striking, fangs erect and jaws close like a box as the poison is discharged upon skin penetration.
Symptoms of Snake Poisoning and First Aid
Symptoms appear rapidly after a snake bite as venom enters the bloodstream. Initial signs include weakness and sleepiness followed by staggering gait, cold extremities, shallow breathing, vomiting, and possible unconsciousness. Immediate actions aim to prevent venom absorption and lessen its effects.
Snake Bite First Aid Then and Now Guidelines
The article outlines first aid for snake bites, warning against unsafe cures and endorsing limited use of alcohol, tourniquets, or forced extraction. It cites authorities like Martin, Lamb, Mueller, Loitwich, and Morrell, urging medical professional care after initial measures and noting variable outcomes.
