The 14 600 ton Flotta Lauro liner Roma tied up at Cairns at 5 pm on her maiden voyage from Genoa making Cairns the largest port she has visited in Australia. Crowds lined the Esplanade and welcomed the ship with many Italians among the onlookers.
A Cairns Harbour Board spokesman broadcast a welcome as the turbine powered liner Roma berthed. The Italian Consul representative Dr Felice Benura also attended and praised the ship’s fittings and accommodations. Passengers and visitors praised the voyage, with many remarking on the hotel like amenities, cinema, pools, and extensive first class suites and tourist class cabins. The Roma, built for the Italy Australia route, features modern navigation and safety systems and a large crew and passenger facilities, including marinite construction to enhance fire safety.
Avotgursta invited Dr Giacchino Lauro of the Jotte Lauro and Captain An s Carnineich of the Roma to a dinner aboard the liner Roma.
