General Birdwood reflects on ties to Australia in 1920 interview
General Birdwood tells a United Cable Service representative of his pride in the Australian citizen soldiers and regrets severing ties with the Commonwealth. He recalls the West Australia incident, notes his vow not to write a war book, and urges Australia to balance defence spending with safety while maintaining railway gauge readiness for peace and war. A June 1920 Defence Department letter from Mr E. L. Dumster shows Birdwood’s lasting memories of northern Queensland and Northerneland visits amid a busy postwar itinerary in New Zealand.
