War Commentary: Canadian Task In Waterlogged Country

Lieutenant-General H L Gordon Sennett reports Canadian forces near the Scheldt facing difficult fighting. They crossed the Leopold Canal linking the North Sea to a Scheldt arm, established a bridgehead, and pushed toward Walcheren from the south while the Scheldt was crossed north of Antwerp. Severe counterstrikes threatened posts, prompting a sea-borne reinforcement landing. The waterlogged, dyke-surrounded ground makes trenching impossible. Dutch fortifications suffer heavy, potentially century-long damage, raising questions of territorial compensation in the final settlement.
