Dowry Practice in Africa Sparks Change in Gabon Regions
In Equatorial Africa, debate over the native practice of dowry presents questions of tradition and modern reform. French Gabon officials push to abolish dowry, following tribal councils in Gaboon and Cameroons, with tribes like Mongue and Miene moving to end the custom. Polycarp Malonga, a Brazzaville houseboy, faces high costs for marriage including bride price, shoes, a wut, cloth, and palm wine, risking debt and home instability if loans are pursued. The piece notes social pressures, economic strains, and mounting opposition from young men in Central African cities.
