Shortage of Labour Delays Waterfront Trade and Vessels

SYDNEY Sept 1 The waterfront labour shortage causes delays as ships struggle to load goods. Wharf Labourers Union says port shipping has been opportunistic with many vessels arriving with cargoes and wool seasons in full swing. Union reports up to 3000 labourers and rapid membership growth as ships require large crews. Weather and recent heavy rainfall worsen conditions. farmers report frost and poor wheat quality.

Riots in Vale of Glamorgan Prompt Military Deployment

Government detachments ordered to Swindon and Pontypridd as 270 London Metropolitan police and infantry arrive at Tonypandy and Abermain. Rioters clash with police, fences torn down and stones tossed, with over 100 rioters and 20 officers treated. Churchill coordinates troops and warns miners to evacuate and keep clear of flooded pits.

Bible in Late Schools Bill Debate Continues in Council

In Brisbane the Legislative Council resumed debate on the Bible in Late Schools Bill. Mr A H Barlow led the motion to report the amended Education Acts Bill by Thursday November 7 1910. Rancorous exchanges followed with accusations of unconstitutionality and “gag.” The motion passed after a long session at 8 50 p.m. and committees considered clauses. The Council adjourned for the night with discussion ongoing.
