Mareeba Notes On Tobacco Meeting In 1980s Australia
At the Mareeba North Tobacco Growers Co operative Association quarterly meeting 140 members attended. Chairman W J Henderson noted that results for this year were below expectations due to leaf withdrawal but expressed optimism for relief after meetings with Ministers and the Tobacco Marketing Board. General Manager R E Leinster reported 3040 tons of leaf valued at 815,004 from 1882 crop, with 438 tons unsold. The association aims at a 1 million pound crop. production is rising to meet strong demand, with new machines imported to ease shortages. The balance sheet showed surplus wheat, and a weekly tobacco journal may become fortnightly. The secretary J Walker said Commonwealth Employment Service will station an officer at the head office to help growers meet labor needs. Imported leaf from Japan and Rhodesia was discussed, but members resisted purchases due to the leaf’s high quality. imports licences for Japanese leaf were reportedly not to be granted.
