Berlin Divorces Exceed Marriages Amid War’s Aftermath
AP report from Berlin notes divorces now surpass marriages as the registry records show Berlin had 3429 more divorces than marriages from the collapse of Nazi Germany to June 1944. From November to last July 2688 divorce suits were filed, a figure the Berlin press calls far higher than postwar rates. Courts struggle to handle the rush with only 1056 cases heard so far and delays into 1047. German Catholic bishops describe the trend as terrifying and cite factors such as lack of men, shortage of meeting places for the young, wartime marriages to workers, and economic strains eroding partnerships.
