Union Claims Rise From Coal Strike In Australia
In Sydney on May 24 Chief Judge Beeby heard union claims from the Federated Engine drivers and Firemen's Union arising from a coal strike. The log asks for a 30 hour week, six hour day, two columns of pay, and special rates for weekend and holiday work. Minimum weekly pay sought ranges from £9 for winding engine drivers to £6 5s for summers and boiler cleaners, plus 14 days annual leave or full pay. Judge Beeby warned that adopting such a standard for all workers would absorb all wealth and leave none to go round, and adjourned the hearing with Victorian claims to be heard separately.
