Australian Prime Minister R G Menzies began intensive talks with Washington officials aimed at shaping Australia's future in international defence and economic policy. A White House luncheon with President Truman capped a day of high level discussions, including a lengthy session with banker Eugene Black.
After leaving the White House Prime Minister Menzies met with Secretary of State Dean Acheson in a brief session. He said discussions covered a variety of topics with the key aim of establishing a triad Pacific council and getting the casting pact functioning. He praised President Truman’s friendliness toward Australia and noted no talk of expanding the Pacific alliance beyond its current members.
London May 19 AAP Informed British sources expect a cove to appoint an Australian observer to NATO to press Australia as a more effective voice on strategic supplies and Middle East and Far Eastern defence. Discussions between Mr Menzies and Mr Clurrhill will cover Pacific Pact South east Asia Middle East and trade policies.
May 1 report from Canberra states cuts to passenger services to Central and Northern Queensland were raised by Mr. W. Davidson in Parliament. He said several outback routes lost value for travelers while others faced reduced services. Mr. Anthony agreed to inquire into alleged changes. The minister warned against overreach and noted fuel shortages affecting Cairns and the Western Queensland region.
Darwin May 20 Worthwhile rain has broken the drought in Central Australia with falls between 20 points and one inch reported from most Alice Springs district stations. Birdsville also had rain yesterday while Barkly Tableland and Victoria River districts remain dry. Northern Territory Administrator Mr F Wie called it the best news for the Territory, though Derwin and Gulf districts have seen no rain and are not expected to in the current system.
A proposed cancellation of the weekly DC Brisbane Trensville fights would cut fuel use by about 35 percent on coastal routes without reducing seat allocations at each port of call.
At Babinda near Cairns today at 1 30 p m four regional board workers were injured in a transformer yard incident. John McDowell aged 74 suffered a 15 ft fall from a work rig while Clive Veivers and James Bannister received burns and shock from contact with a live cable. Veivers and Bannister were admitted to hospital and McDowell remained in hospital with hand injuries and shock amid a cool off period tonight.
London dispatch reports three Broadmoor inmates including George Frederick Penton 156 and Jack Kingston were found dead in separate blocks. Penton, who strangled his landlady in 1944, died by wire noose. Kingston, described as periodically violent, death undetermined. Charles Pritchard, 70, died of natural causes.
May 20 the Postmaster General said four 24 hour guards would cover 67 bags of mail from Korea on the vessel Anking at Newcastle. He referred to reports of mail pilferage aboard with 20 bags ripped open in the sealed hold revealing parcels of souvenirs for Australian troops in Korea and Japan.
A federation seeks a writ of prohibition against the full bench ruling and a July order by Judge Beeby affecting waterside workers. Counsel argues the order exceeds powers of the Commonwealth and is grounded on an award terminated by the Stevedoring Industry Act. The hearing adjourned to tomorrow.
May 30 late today the Attorney General Senator J A Spicer filed a motion in the Sydney Registry of the Arbitration Court stating that if the High Court upholds the Arbitration Court order of May lifting the ban the federation may be punished for contempt. The notice, signed by Commonwealth Crown Solicitor D Bell, is returnable before the Full Bench in Melbourne on May 27.
Leslie W. B. Clark of Cairns is named superintendent of the Rockhampton Ambulance Brigade following the death of long-time head Edward Clark. A 46 year old with 19 years at Cairns, Clark helped organise the North Queensland serial ambulance. He will assume duties in about a month, while remaining cautious until an official notice.
May 18 London AAP reports the Minister for Food Major Lloyd George faced questions in the House of Commons over British imports of butter from Australia. Conservative MP Carl Osborne asked about last year’s purchases and possible recoupment of losses plus a further price increase under long term contract terms.
Cargo supply remains tight as a second reel reservation emerges amid limited shipments. Industry sources cite factory delays and port backlogs delaying obtaining essential materials for ongoing operations.

A Cairns shipping industry spokesman condemned waterside workers for refusing to handle Hambledon mill sugar after a fire destroyed 73 tons of raw sugar. Board of Reference awards were rejected, causing port stoppages and delays to shipments to Sydney, with ongoing concern from the sugar industry and wider community.
Brisbane May 20. No further large building projects will be undertaken by the Quinland Country Women's Association until commitments in hand are reduced. The conference decided the State Treasurer Mrs L R Mouland said the association had a debit balance of £19,780 10 in the State Advances Account and the Commonwealth Bank would not approve more State Advances unless urgent. The association's assets more than cover the balance, but approved building would be completed. Mrs Williams of Yandina moved that the money squeeze would keep members from meetings.
May 20 cabinet will consider easing building controls in Queensland. Minister A Jones is examining timber brick and cement supplies. If allowed, relaxations apply only to timber homes with prearmt limits set south of Bourkhampton and north of Rockhampton. Government inquiry cites timber surplus from drought aiding supply.
Brisbane May 7 Commemorative books for secondary pupils and colour ecards for primary pupils prepared for the Boys tour are now being distributed to schools for presentation. Queensland officials urge a suitable explanation of the tour souvenirs.
Dr Harold Thompson, head of the fisheries division, announced a CBLEL0 lugger will visit Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria to assess pearl shell grounds and spearhead cultivation. The plan includes mapping fisheries potential, introducing Japanese culturing methods, and developing pearl culture with raft-based oyster cultures.

Reported sighting of seven fishermen near Brisbane on May 2. A launch with engine failure drifted miles southeast of Point Low on Stradbroke Island and was still adrift at night. Water police believe the launch engine broke down and it was blown further out.
