The Strand Hotel licensee George Pratt faced trial over keeping the bar open for sale of liquor after 11 PM. Across the courtroom, witnesses testified the hall door was ajar and a back room crowd lingered while Pratt claimed he was closing up and none could have received liquor after 11 PM. Defense argued it hinged on intent and whether the front door was opened by a lodger or boarder.
