Commonwealth Statistician Dr Qalfad Wilson urged immediate Census use to guide postwar reconstruction. He said the last Census was 14 years old, leaving information out of date as Australia moved from depression, through war, toward economic and social renewal. Witnesses describe the arming of signals, the Areman supervising crossing, and a car impact with injuries and efforts to evacuate passengers. Weather was clear, alarms sounded, and emergency actions followed after the incident.
