Award details from the 1913 sugar mill case and dissent

The inquiry set the central board to fix the 1913 season award for the Hambledon sugar mill. It considered capital value, production costs, and fair returns, with growers and mill owners presenting conflicting claims. Dissenting memos from Marshall and Smith challenge the majority on cost, capital, and pricing, noting growers benefited and questioning evidence handling.

Mill Resale Prices Raise Loss Risk for 1918 Season

Evidence from Mr Knox shows Hambledon mill earned only about 2 percent on capital while paying 290-14 per ton for cane. An extra 20 11d per ton would convert this weak return into a substantial loss. Brannnich uses Mulgrave as standard, noting proprietary mills must pay lower cane prices to preserve dividends and capital, with typical profits around 108 per ton of sugar.
