Bravery in the British response to magnetic mines
The article details how Britain, with civilian science aid, mastered magnetic mines from their inception in 1918 to the 1939 Thames estuary incident. Commander Ouvry and a team disassembled a mine from a parachuted device, risking detonation, and were decorated by King George VI for their precise, cautious work. The piece notes the mine’s construction, with non magnetic parts and a magnetic needle triggering a detonator, and recalls a later fatality of Petty Officer Baldwin related to mine disposal.
