War Costs in Britain and Allied Nations
The article analyzes wartime spending, comparing Britain’s outlays of about £2.867 billion for the year with Australia’s by broad ratios. It notes Britain may spend roughly a third of its gross national income, while France and Germany face heavy costs. It discusses funding credits, income depletion, and potential escalations as the war widens to Scandinavia, Holland, and Belgium. It mentions Canada, New Zealand, and Australia adjusting budgets to support war, with Australia possibly absorbing up to 9 percent of its national income if war spending rises. It cites statements by the British Chancellor and Finance Ministers about budget adequacy and the high costs of sustaining the war.
