A correspondence piece argues that government and industry clash harms production. It decries strikes, union leadership, and industrial courts while urging free labor mobility, fair pay, and recognition of worker honesty to foster prosperous industry and peaceful civic life. The writer pledges to oppose coercive union action and supports voluntary arbitration over state mandates.
The fragment expresses fear of autocratic domination and foreign influence in Australia. It argues that obedience to laws should be balanced with national sovereignty and questions how the government handles civil obedience and social peace in the country.
A fragment from Elwood Mead outlines the first settlement under the California Land Settlement Act. The program offers 4 percent loans to qualified applicants, requires ten percent down, and aims to place labor on improved farms with components like workers dwellings and small plots. It notes a concrete highway, two gravel roads, and an electric train serving the area near Durham, about 90 miles north of “ramenio.”
The account notes a 60 acre farmers range with costs per acre and a plan to reserve a twenty acre wooded park for school and social use. It highlights families within a mile, a cow, and general settlement life. The piece stresses civic pride as the community’s significant feature and suggests land investment is feasible with trains and foresight.
