Railway Dept May Dismiss Surplus Workers in Brisbane

Brisbane July 2 facing declining revenue the Railway Department may dismiss about 2300 surplus workers. Minister Morgan spoke at Roma Street noting revenue from July 1 to 21 fell 44170 per weekday and a Knowle line opening could lose ELI a year. Under a proposed superannuation scheme resignations and dismissals could reduce surplus by over 600 yearly, allowing gradual integration of surplus staff to permanent roles and reducing future rationing of work. He cautioned no absolute guarantee against some dismissals even with the scheme.

The pool is temporary, not fixing the exchange problem, and if Australian currency remains unchanged, unspent import funds shift to domestic produce, raising prices and widening the gap with global levels.
