Fires and heroism aboard the Corona during a Mesopotamian voyage
In May 1967 the Corona transporting troops and officers faced raging fires in its bunkers off the Siiex coast. As explosions and smoke spread, stokers were injured and burned, volunteers swarmed to man the stokeholds, and flooding was deemed the only remedy. Mastery of fear and duty defined the perilous sea passage as fires raged and the ship endured heavy damage while crew and officers acted decisively.
