Cairns Cane Growers Debate Two Pool System Over Sugar Output
A Cairns district cane growers meeting at Gordonvale discussed over production in the sugar industry. The group backed a two pool system proposed by W M Simmonds over a 75 25 percent acreage restriction, urging district feedback before final decisions. They warned that embargo effects and national policy impact prices and employment, stressing a state wide, mill policed approach to any production controls and urging involvement with the AWU and industrial court to protect workers.

Sugar Pool proposal debated in cane industry meeting
The discussion centers on two sugar pools as a method to protect growers and stabilize prices. Critics warn the plan would let authorities dictate cane areas, while supporters argue a pool could shield workers from labor restrictions and smooth fluctuations in crops and prices. Experts note potential embargo effects, mill reactions, and the need for a workable scheme acceptable to delegates and markets.
