Rebuilding Dover and the wartime memory of an English town
The Dover story recalls a Royal Navy veteran's account of four years of bombardment and vigilance along the coast. Dover’s postwar rebuilding includes American street names, new housing by US aid, and plans by Sir Patrick Abercrombie for a modern town center. A damaged Wesleyan chapel, rebuilt after 1917, will regain the historic stone with new engravings marking war and resilience.

Byrd Expedition Sets Antarctic Quest Amid Blizzards
United States Rear Admiral Richard E Byrd leads a 13-ship task force and about 300 scientists into Antarctica for a four month program over 2,000,000 square miles. Planes will scout the South Pole region, study geology and weather, and test equipment in subzero conditions. The venture, sited in a vast wasteland of 100 mile an hour gales and 60 degree below zero temperatures, aims to enhance knowledge of the continent and possibly detect minerals or uranium in the Grey Pacific ring. Other nations’ expeditions planned nearby as National Geographic teams join to study Little America to the Weddell area.
