Endeavour at Batavia and the toll of sickness and repair
The Endeavour, by Captain Cook, reached Batavia where Banks Solander Tupia and crew faced fever and mortality. The ship required careening and repairs after storms and heavy damage while officers and sailors fell ill or died. Captain Cook praised Batavian yard workers, and the voyage continued amid scarce water and rising peril.
