Eight days after the Mackay cyclone, government officials arrive as relief, repairs, and disinfection efforts proceed. Reports describe continuing rain, rising flood dangers, widespread property damage, and rescue efforts including locals pulling neighbors to safety. The town sees ruined hotels, shattered factories, flooded streets, and a new refuge opened for the homeless.
The Gazette describes widespread ruin from Mirani to Macau with shattered crates, downed telegraph lines, and destroyed hotels. Mirani bears the worst damage with a fatality reported at Walkerston while the railway embankment and station area suffer heavy losses and raw sugar spills into a yard lagoon, prompting outcry over preventable destruction.
Deputy Railway Commissioner W Pagan rode the Morialta toward the south when gale force winds dragged anchors and wind driven spray limited visibility to 20 yards. Captains battled to keep ships off rocks while storm petrels rode the masts and Captain Webb received a testimonial from saloon passengers for his steadfast conduct during the cyclone.
The annual meeting had poor attendance and read minutes from the previous year. Chairman RG Kerr praised the BaBinda district brigade, noted a new motor was a great help, and reported building expansions with plans for a verandah. Committee elected Mr McDonnell as Chairman and the treasurer after the meeting.
The weather has cleared yet stays very warm as a peculiar mist drifts over the ranges around Koorboora. Miss McLellan, who suffered a severe accident, is improving under Dr Turnstall at Chillagoe Hospital. Tin prices drawing prospectors to the area, with Irvine Bank hiring new workers at local mines and Fred Reid from Mungana visiting for mine inspections. Ilies E Rammins sails abroad after a lengthy holiday in Bereton, while Miss Mackey visits her sister in Herberton.
