Henry Wallace announced a bid for the presidency as an Independent in November 1948 and called for a new party to oppose war makers. He said Americans face confusion and fear from war and economic strain as he toured the country, speaking to about a half million people.
In a rallying call, Henry Wallace urges voters to support a new third party aimed at ending war and restoring living standards. He attacks universal military training, Wall Street influence, and Truman and Marshall policies, proposing an independent 1948 presidential run and a comprehensive peace program.
The Times criticizes Wallace’s 1948 independent run as risking a victory by reactionaries. The Herald Tribune praises his goodwill but calls his view oversimplified. The Daily Worker urges study of his challenge to the political status quo. Senator Papper remains with the Democrats.

Dee Torio, 30, described as Hideki Tojo’s US based nephew, was arrested for robbing a house in Osaka. He becomes the fourth Tojo family member charged this year as Hideki Tojo faces trial. A brother was jailed in September for stealing at Tokio station and another was found as a vagrant.
Snow blocked roads in several districts while Southern Central and Eastern Iceland reported clear sunny spells with cold winds. In Nome Alaska on December 29 a civilian bush pilot Bill Muntz rescued four survivors of a Super Fort route crash and then took off to recover the remaining eight crew members. Within an hour Frank Whaley landed with two more crew members and headed back to search for the final two survivors believed to have left the wreckage.
Rescue teams continue seeking two missing paratroopers from a Superfortress crash near Nome Alaska. Four survivors were evacuated at 3 15 am Pacific Standard Time as harsh blizzard conditions hampered ground and air searches.
A Netherlands East Indies government spokesman announced Sot Matra’s northeast coast district as a State Participating in the Federal reconstruction effort. A decree, issued Christmas Day, follows a request by the provisional council representing about two million inhabitants. West Java and Madura are expected to receive similar status soon.
Ottawa December 29 Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced an order in council approving tariff concessions granted by Canada at the Geneva Trade Conference. The new measures take effect on January 1 and reflect the terms agreed at the Geneva talks.
Melbourne suburbs faced a fierce northerly gale described as cyclone like. Roofs torn, trees uprooted, fences blown, and chimneys damaged across Burwood Camberwell Caulfield and Hartwell with trains blocked and shops closed as dust reddened goods. A 68 year old farmer Alfred Packham died after being frightened from a harvesting machine in Woodstock. Two men clung to a dinghy in Corio Bay were hospitalized with shock. Bendigo and Wycheproof also suffered severe damage including collapsed brickworks and grass fires rural fires. Melbourne fire brigade logged 30 calls and £5000 in damage at Ego Pty hardware in St Melbourne.
Brisbane reports the Commonwealth Social Services Department refused unemployment benefit for 60 Mourilyan watersiders on strike since November. They quit after rejecting a Commission ruling to travel 15 miles by bus and start at 9 am, instead of the prior train travel with breakfast at Mourilyan. Shipping men say the stand delays 6000 tons of sugar from Mourilyan.
Melbourne reports the National Airlines Commission approved fare cuts across all routes to below rival airline and first class rail rates. T A A will move to second class service by dropping frills like meals and bus transport, eliminating uneconomic services, with a decision pending at the next meeting.
Arthur Amérews Beach, 41, remanded until January 6 on allegations he murdered Mrs. Ansle Kathleen Sturrock at the Burlington Hotel. Police say he had lived with her, planned to kill her husband and son-in-law, and attempted to choke and assault her before disputes over a cabin trunk. Police note Mrs. Sturrock is Jer ry Robinson’s mother, not his wife.
Chinese Civil War dispatches report Nationalist combined army and air force engaging along the Hat Kow Yochang highway in large scale operations with uncertain progress. Meanwhile a general offensive on the main railway system was anticipated.
Greek delegate M. Alexis Kyrou announced a formal note to Secretary-General Trygve Lie accusing Yugoslavia of violating the General Assembly anti war mongering and Balkans resolutions. He charged Belgrade radio with backing northern Greece guerrilla forces and condemning the Greek government.
The U N Balkans Commission warned that any foreign recognition of General Markos's rebel government in Greece would threaten peace. Athens officials said Greece would seek outside military aid under the U N Charter if recognized. Reports say fighting continues around Konitza with guerrillas holding high ground while Greek forces push through mountain passes.
Ottawa dispatch reports equipment for a small arms ammunition factory shipped from Canada to China under a ten million dollar deal for Canadian surplus war equipment. The package includes Mosquito fighter bomber ammunition and airfield gear. Machine tools power tools and presses will aid in producing 1 millimetre cartridges.

Tokyo December 3 Japan’s Ganers Teje testified before the Imperial Military press that Japanese war prisoners, including Indian and other nationalities, were treated equally in the Burma Thailand railway project. He stated the line aimed to supply Japanese forces and improve cross border commerce despite submarine threats and traffic losses.
