North Queensland tobacco factory drives regional prosperity
The Mareeba based North Queensland Tobacco Growers Co-Operative Association Ltd has expanded from a four room setup in 1947 to a near fully mechanised operation capable of handling over 200 tons of leaf daily. The plant, designed largely by staff, now produces leaf tobacco for blending, with plans to test cigarettes and new processing methods including improved drying and impurity removal. The cooperative, under Mr. Ralph Leinster, has boosted local jobs and promises further growth to meet rising orders from across Australia.
