Tax on eligibles heavier than first thought
A Federal Treasurer statement outlines a 10 percent tax on eligibles with a £10 minimum in each case. Single men aged 21 to 45 with £100 yearly income face £10 tax, rising to £18 or more at £250. The policy targets low earners, sparing the rich, and raises concerns over discrimination and ignored individual circumstances.

Ring Barking Forests Boost Water Flow and Reduce Disease
The column recalls St Bastian and Abbott studies on ring barking in NSW and Hunter River areas. It notes large water yields after trees die, draining swamps and potentially reducing disease, with Abbott defending earlier lab results and field observations from 1869 to 1888 showing increased stream flow and more springs after timber death.
